Ladies in Red are More Sexy?

People who have watched 《The Matrix》 should know that, red clothes could confuse men’s mind. In this science fiction movie shot in 1999, the hero Neo gets distracted by a lady in red tight clothes, which leads to him to be stranded in ambush. Recently, a new research shows that, colors of clothes could influence people’s judgement. Males consider that females in red are more interested in sex, this result also hints that people might associate the colors with fertility.
Wearing clothes in red is something new. Women have used pink blusher and bright lipstick with a history of more than 12,000 years. If you get valentine cards, you will see many red hearts decorated on those cards.

Adam Pazda, psychologist of University of Rochester, also the author of this research, said that, this synergy is derived from Biology. Female animals, from chimpanzees to all kinds of baboons, when they are in breeding period, their female hormone will reach the spikes, which could lead to veins to dilate, then the color of their faces would change to bright red. Those red faces are signals of courtship.

Pazda said that this appearance also applies to human being. In a recent research , scientists found that compared with other colors like white, males are more likely to be attracted by females in red. Also it doesn’t matter with the mainsails of the clothes. Pazda emphasized that “It’s not must be red or white T-shirts, it could be a simple red T-shirt.”

In order to find the reason, Pazda and his mates made a simple experiment. They showed 25 male volunteers a picture of a male with red or white T-shirt. Researchers let volunteers mark the picture from 1 to 9, in order to judge the sex level of this model. In other words, the question was “Is the model interested in sex?”

Males consider red clothes as the signal of open attitude of sex. Because the result of this experiment showed that, model in red has more 1 – 1.5 point than white. Pazda with his mates post the result on 《Journal of Social Experimental Psychology》. He said that the result also explain why males have more interest in females in red. As we all know, males will overstate females’ attraction, with a premise that they think the females with open mind of sex.

“I think it’s a good experiment”, said by Paul Eastwick, the social psychology worker of Texas A&M University, “It let me know that some strange behaviors haven’t been widely used in the long history of human’s evolution”.

Psychologist of Germany University of Munich, Markus Maier also said that “This research of the team is interesting”. But, for now, it still couldn’t explain the reason for males’ loving red so much. Maier said that, in order to learn about the true reason, scientist need to go to everywhere of the world, and research the popularity of red.
